Yamba is located on the north coast of NSW approximately halfway between Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay. It is around a 7 hour drive north of Sydney and three hours south of Brisbane.
Yamba is a small coastal fishing town at the mouth of the Clarence River surrounded by Yuraygir National Park. There are beautiful beaches to visit, plenty of fishing spots and some great restaurants and cafes.
Yamba has a humid subtropical climate, with summer temps from 20°C to 27°C and winter temps from 10°C up to 20°C.
There is a good choice of accommodation, particularly resorts and tourist parks with plenty of family friendly facilities.

Yamba things to do

Hickey Island Reserve

Hickey Island is located at the mouth of the Clarence River and just a short stroll from town. On the north side of the island is Whiting Beach, which is one of the most protected swimming beaches in the area. Keep your eye out for dolphins entering the river .There is plenty of parking, picnic tables, toilet facilities and showers available. There are walking tracks on the island and there are great beach fishing spots as well.

Angourie Blue and Green Pools

The fresh water Blue Pool and the larger Green Pool collectively known as the Blue pools are former quarrying sites. They are located at Angourie, 10 minutes drive south of Yamba, within Angourie Reserve between Spooky Beach and Angourie Beach. Both pools are used for swimming and diving. Because the pools are freshwater, they are subject to algae blooms, especially in the warmer months. When the pools are closed, you can still swim in the large saltwater rock pool beside the Blue Pool.

Yuraygir National Park

Located between Yamba and Coffs Harbour, Yuraygir National park boasts the state's longest stretch of undeveloped coastline. Try the Yuraygir Coastal walk, or enjoy whale watching, beach camping, swimming and fishing activities. The Yuraygir Coastal walk is a 4 day walk through the park along the coast. Close to Yamba is the start of the northern end of the park with the Angourie Bay picnic area, a lovely park-like setting ideal for a family get-together.

Yamba Beaches

There are some beautiful beaches to choose from in the Yamba area. Main Beach features an ocean pool at the southern end, plenty of grass areas and the iconic Pacific Hotel overlooking it. Just north past the lighthouse is Turners Beach bordering the breakwall and a little more open than Main beach. Whiting Beach is in the Clarence rivermouth is generally the most sheltered, perfect for kids. Spooky Beach in Angourie is worth a visit - south end for families and a good surf break. For surfers Angourie Point is the best place to surf in Yamba - it is a protected surfing reserve and not for beginners.

Clarence River

The beautiful Clarence River offers plenty of activities for the visitor including fishing, boating, kayaking and pedal boats. The river is one of the best locations for fishing in Yamba - home to Blackfish, Jew, Flathead, Groper, Snapper and much more. Hire a boat or BBQ pontoon from Yamba Marina. Catch a ferry across the river to Iluka. Services run up to 5 times daily. Clarence River ferries also offer scenic river cruises and a Sunday night live music cruise. Kayak hire is available through Yamba Kayak and you can hire a stand up paddle board from SUP Yamba on Whiting Beach.

There are plenty of good cafes and restaurants to choose from in Yamba. Yamba Shores Tavern has a great location and a covered playground for the kids. The Pacific Hotel is a must - for the views alone, but the meals are great too. Sandbar at Main Beach, Latitude 29, The Italian On The Hill, The Mexican, Bean Scene Cafe, Leche Cafe, Mona's Kitchen, Beachwood Cafe, Sassafras, Indian Fusion Tapas Bar and Restaurant are all quality restaurants and worth a visit if you have time. If you get a chance make sure you visit Barbaresco in Angourie and the Cunjevoi Restaurant at the Angourie Resort.
